HOW DOES MICROPEEL WORK?

KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

NORMAL SKIN

Has an equal balance of water and oil, making it naturally moisturized. The pores are medium-sized. When you pull the skin away from bony structure, it springs back to normal position. Lines and wrinkles are appropriate for age.

DRY SKIN

Your skin becomes dry when the top layers lose water and natural oils. You need both oil and water to prevent dry skin. The oil acts as a barrier to prevent your skin from losing water. Dry skin can be caused by heredity, hormones, or other environmental factors, such as sun exposure or cool, dry air. As you get older, your skin may become dryer. As dry skin ages, it’s more likely to become wrinkly than other skin types.

You know your skin is dry when:

  • Skin feels tight.
  • Skin can be flaky.
  • Pores aren’t very visible or tend to be smaller because less oil is produced.
  • Skin looks dull.
  • Skin feels rough.
  • Skin easily becomes chapped.
  • Skin can feel itchy.
  • Dry skin conditions

Many people suffer from weather-related dry skin in the winter. The cold air prevents the skin from producing its natural moisture barrier and causes the top layer to dry out and flake off. It usually clears up in a few days with regular use of moisturizer. However, there are a few more severe, though common, skin conditions that can cause similar symptoms and require a few changes to your daily skincare routine. These conditions may require special treatment and should be considered in all your skincare choices.

When dry skin is itchy:

Dry skin itches when your skin has developed cracks and fissures (which you may not even see) and bacteria, chemicals or other irritants have entered it. For immediate relief, try 100% aloe vera gel or calamine lotion. Benadryl creams, which contain antihistamines, temporarily stops itching. What you really need is to allow your skin time to heal. Use a good moisturizer that contains oils that will lie on top of the skin and act as a barrier, preventing moisture from leaving your skin. Petrolatum, cocoa butter and baby oil (should not be used on the face) are known as excellent barriers. One study had shown that if you coat your skin with petrolatum and wipe it off immediately, you will retain enough barrier protection to make a noticeable difference.

OILY SKIN

When oil glands produce extra oil, it shows up on the top of your skin, primarily on the nose, forehead and chin, or T-zone area of the face. That’s where the highest concentration of oil glands are. That can’t be changed as the level of oil the skin produces is genetic, but it can be controlled. Oily skin has a coarse texture. Usually, oily areas tend to shine. Oily skin results from overactive oil glands; the oil helps retain dead skin cells in the hair follicles. Pores tend to be larger. The dead skin cells may darken with exposure to the air, forming blackheads. Often, individuals with oily skin have a tendency to develop acne in their teen and middle years, and overgrown oil glands, or sebaceous hyperplasia, in the middle and late years.

You know you have oily skin when:

  • Your pores are clogged.
  • Your face looks shiny and feels greasy.
  • Your makeup wears off within a few hours of application.
  • You are prone to pimples, blackheads and whiteheads.

Special care for oily skin:

  • Cleanse the skin at least twice daily. Never go to bed without washing your face, even if you have no makeup on.
  • Moisturizing is still necessary on a daily basis. If your face feels tight after washing, use a light moisturizer. Oily skin tends to be dehydrated, since moisturizers are generally not often used.
  • Drink lots of water to keep skin well-hydrated from the inside out.

COMBINATION SKIN

When you have some areas of dry skin and other areas of oily skin, it’s considered combination. On most days, you probably have either normal or dry skin on most of your face especially on cheeks and neck, and your oily skin is concentrated in the T-zone, which is across the forehead, down the nose and chin.

You know you have combination skin when:

  • In some areas, your skin can feel tight after washing; it can be flaky, look dull or feel rough.
  • In other areas, typically the T-zone, your skin looks shiny, feels greasy and is prone to pimples and blackheads.

Caring for combination skin

Combination skin makes up the majority of skin types. There are several ways to take care of the oily skin without damaging the normal or dry part of it. Even though your skin may seem to require two types of treatment, it can become more balanced with a good skincare routine.

SENSITIVE SKIN

There are 2 types of skin that fall into the sensitive skin category. One is susceptible to breakouts, and the other is easily irritated. The vast majority of sensitive-skin reactions fall into the latter category. The irritations come from overusing products or using products that are too harsh, particularly cleansers.

You know you have sensitive skin when:

  • You are prone to blotchy skin patches.
  • Products often cause redness and irritation.
  • Skin breaks out with exposure to household cleaners.
  • Alpha hydroxy acids and retinols cause irritation.

Caring for Sensitive Skin

  • If you’ve found that your skin is reacting to some skincare products and showing signs of irritation or redness, you probably have sensitive skin. Read on to find out how to stop blotches and irritation with tips on treating your skin with TLC (tender, loving care)
  • Choose makeup, moisturizers and sunscreens that are hypoallergenic and fragrance free.
  • Use a mild, soap-free cleanser.
  • When choosing makeup, especially foundation and blush, buy oil-free products. Makeup that is water-based and noncomedogenic won’t clog pores. There are also oil-absorbing foundations that help keep oil off the face.
  • Use a daily sunscreen that is not oil-based, preferably a gel as it’s less greasy.

AGING SKIN

With time and environmental damage, young radiant skin begins to fade – and fine lines and wrinkles emerge – as skin loses its ability to retain moisture and skin-firming elements such as collagen and elastin. At the same time, irregular melanin production creates uneven skin tones, age spots and blotching. These anti-aging products are designed to address these issues and more, restoring moisture and reinvorgating new cell growth for smoother, younger-looking skin.

ACNE SKIN

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the oil glands in the skin. Irregular exfoliation of skin cells in the hair follicles blocks the normal exit of oil from the oil glands. This results in inflammation and infections to the skin. The onset of acne is typically associated with puberty because oil gland production increases during this time.

Acne isn’t just for kids

Whether you’ve had acne before or not, few beauty problems are as frustrating as blemishes on adult skin. Sometimes women actually begin breaking out in their 30’s or 40’s. This may be result of hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, menstrual cycle or menopause. It can also be a result of an overproduction of androgens, male-type hormones that cause increased oil production. Other causes include breakouts that come from removing facial hair or using makeup.
Treating adult acne is similar to treating acne developed in earlier years. Use a mild cleanser, a non-oily sunscreen and noncomedogenic cosmetics. Over-the-counter remedies containing benzoyl peroxide or alpha and beta hydroxy acids (such as salicylic acids) may be helpful. If these don’t work, consult a dermatologist, who may suggest antibiotics or other drugs such as Retin-A or Azelaic acid. If the doctor suspects the flare-up is caused by hormones, then birth control pills may be recommended for pre-menopausal women, and estrogen (hormone replacement therapy) may be recommended for menopausal women.

What causes acne?

  • Genetics. If your mother/father had acne as a teenager, there is a good chance that you will, too.
  • Hormones. During adolescence, hormones called androgens become active and stimulate oil glands in your skin, increasing oil production. This, in turn, clogs pores, causing pimples and blackheads. Hormonal changes around your period or birth control pills – starting or stopping – can also cause an acne flare-up. (In some cases, however, BCP are acne treatment.)
  • Stress. While stress can’t actually cause acne, it will potentially aggravate this or any other skin condition.
  • Diet. Dermatologists aren’t actually sure if diet plays a critical role in acne. Some experts, however, do believe that food allergies can trigger acne breakouts.
  • Washing your face too often. This can aggravate the skin, causing acne to occur.
  • Greasy skincare products and oily cosmetics. Any product that clogs oil ducts is a culprit and may cause acne.
  • Medications. Acne can be a side effect of some drugs, including barbiturates, seizure medication and steroids.

Special care for acne-prone skin:

  • Cleanse the skin at least twice a day. Never go to bed without washing your face, even if you have had no makeup on.
  • Moisturizing is not necessary on a daily basis. However, if your face feels tight after washing, use a light moisturizer.
  • Oily skin tends to be dehydrated since moisturizers are not used as often; drink lots of water to keep skin well-hydrated.

Myths about acne

For decades, there have been volumes written about the causes of acne. However, thanks to scientific research, facts about blemishes have changed. Here are some common misconceptions:
  • Chocolate, pizza, peanuts and fried foods are no-no’s for everybody. The new school of thought on food intake is that some people react to foods they eat (allergy); others do not.
  • The sun (or a sunlamp) is good for acne. Exposure to the sun may dry up pimples, but it hardly seems worth it when you weigh the cons: Sun exposure (especially burns) can cause skin cancer and will lead to premature aging.
  • Acne will go away by the time you hit 30. Unfortunately, many adults suffer from acne well into their 50s and older.
  • Poor grooming causes acne. The presence of acne does not mean your face is dirty.
  • Abrasive cleansers are good for acne. Doctors find that harsh exfoliants usually aggravate acne.

Eliminating Blackheads

Blackheads, also known as open comedones, are flat, darkened spots that form when pores become plugged
with a mixture of sebum and dead skin cells. Their dark appearance is caused by the densely packed skin cells, which take on a dark color. It’s a common myth that dirt or unclean skin causes blackheads. Blackheads are more prevalent in the T-zone, where the sebaceous glands are extremely active, but can show up anywhere on the face. They can turn into a full-blown acne lesion if they become inflamed or exposed to bacteria. Unfortunately, blackheads are very hard to prevent because of the skin’s constant sebum production and cell turnover. Washing with a salicylic acid cleanser will temporarily remove pore-clogging debris and surface oil. Alpha hydroxyl acids are also a good first line of defense; they gently exfoliate skin to prevent cells from building up and clogging pores.
Don’t pick at blackheads or try to squeeze them with your fingers. You run the risk of infecting them and injuring your skin. Stubborn blackheads require a more aggressive approach. Your dermatologist may prescribe a topical retinoid like Differin or Retin-A. Unlike alpha hydroxyl acids, retinoids loosen the blackheads in addition to speeding up cell turnover so skin cells don’t have a chance to clog pores. They also have the unique benefit of slowing down oil production so new blackheads are less likely to form. Unfortunately, retinoids are not a quick fix. It will take a few weeks to see the results and skin may become extremely dry and flaky in the process.
A series of glycolic or other mild acid peels can also help, though they are not recommended if you are using a retinoid because of the potential for irritation. A peel will quickly slough off dead skin cells while removing some of the debris from pores. Five or six peels are recommended but results can usually be seen after the second peel. An at-home routine of salicylic and glycolic acid skincare products is often used to maintain the benefits.
Your dermatologist or skincare technician may also use an extractor to remove individual blackheads. An extractor is a metal instrument with a small round opening on the end. The opening is pressed against individual blackheads for a few seconds to push out the debris. You may experience some discomfort but the process is usually very quick and it’s an effective way to remove blackheads. There is no permanent solution for getting rid of blackheads, but a consistent skincare routine can help keep them under control.
